Landing Authority on the Everest Base Camp Route
Only 4 Helicopter Landing Zones Are Authorized
Helicopter operations in the Everest region are strictly regulated due to extreme altitude, fragile glacial terrain, environmental sensitivity, and flight safety concerns. Contrary to common assumptions, helicopters are NOT allowed to land freely anywhere along the Everest Base Camp route.
In reality, only four locations are officially authorized for helicopter landings during normal operations. These landing points are regulated by aviation authorities and local administration to ensure safety, environmental protection, and controlled air traffic.
This blog explains where helicopters are legally allowed to land, why these restrictions exist, and what travelers must understand before booking Everest helicopter flights.
Landing Limits
From 2024 to 2026 Helicopters were only allowed to land 4 times after flying from its base. After 4 landing it should get back to its base. But this rule had impact in Tourism business, cost and operation. So in 2026 April 24 this rule has been updated. Now, the Helicopter can do as many landing as it wants but it is compulsary to have rest after every 2 hours flight.
Weight Restriction (takeoff and landing)
The real weight limit of Helicopter in SFor Everest Base camp trekkers and travelers.tandered altitude is 450kg, As helicopter goes higher the wind air temperature and pressure changes. so for smooth operation there is a limitation of weight above 4500m. According to CAAN the helicopter is allowed to lift only 3 person and 12-15 kg baggage each from 4500m and above. Once helicopter reach 5000 meter it should lift only 2 person and the baggage.
for example : Kalapatther which is one of the popular destination for Everest Base camp Helicopter tour and trek. It is not allowed to land more than 2 person in kala patther (5.644 m)
Restricted Area
Resricted area like Samagoun (Manaslu), Samdo (Mansaslu), Kunchenjunga, Damadorkunda need special permit to fly. Only in cases of rescue and emergency, Helicopters are allowed to fly. Special cases like Damadorkunda helicopter tour requires one Security officer flying with you.
Why Landing Restrictions Exist in the Everest Region
The Everest region lies within a high-altitude protected zone with some of the most complex flying conditions on Earth. Landing authority is restricted due to:
Unstable glacier surfaces
Thin air and reduced engine performance
Sudden weather changes and strong valley winds
Environmental protection of Sagarmatha National Park
Risk management for rescue and commercial flights
As a result, only designated helipads and controlled landing zones are approved.
